love hurts but sometimes it's a good hurt

Indiana sat in the Starbucks cafe, stirring her now-cold coffee, her mind far off in another world. She hadn't been able to function properly since her brother, Adam, got drafted. She couldn't believe this was happening. Only last year, the family had been whole, been together, and now they were being torn apart? This war was really doing her head in. She wanted it all to stop, she wanted to get back to normal. But some wishes weren't granted. How long would it be until she saw her brother again? A year? Two? Never? She couldn't know for sure. And that's what she hated the most. She hated NOT knowing. Indiana had always been the type of girl who wanted everything in order. Not that she was a neat freak or anything, she just wasn't a big fan of chaos.
As people passed her by, she sank more and more into a world of her own. Her hand was still on the spoon that stirred in the coffee, and she was oblivious to glances she received from people walking in the store. Not that she'd care. She never really gave much thought to what people thought of her. She was who she was and that was all that mattered. Sure, she could be popular, due to her warm, usually happy exterior, but she often preferred her own company to others. She wasn't always like that, though. Everything had changed the summer her sister died. The whole family had been in California, during a summer vacation, at a cabin they had borrowed off relatives for three weeks. She and Thalia, her twin sister, had gone out on the lake, on a small raft they had made when they were little (they came here almost every summer). They had been twelve, and their parents trusted them enough to let them go out on the lake unsupervised. As they neared the middle of the lake, Thalia had fallen out and as much as Indiana tried to help her, Thalia panicked and swallowed too much water, resulting in her drowning. Indiana became withdrawn after the tragedy, but has now slowly come out her shell, socializing with others at last. She had been making great progress, when all this had happened. And now her only remaining sibling had been taken from her. How much more would she have to suffer?
But she tried to remain optimistic through this all. Surely her brother would return safe and sound back to her. He just HAD to.
She still had her parents. Her mother was a high school math teacher, and her father a well-respected doctor. They cared greatly for their children and Thalia's death was a terrible experience for all of them. Now, when their first born was being sent off to war, leaving only Indiana (who was safe in the confines of the university) left with them, they tried their best to protect her. Sometimes it got on Indy's nerves, but she would survive.
All these thoughts raced through the mind of Indiana, but she was suddenly startled when a shadow fell upon her coffee cup.
